Hybrid Surface Pumps

What are hybrid surface pumps and what are they used for?

These are pumps installed outside the water that draw from tanks or sumps and can operate with both solar energy and single-phase 230 V AC. The hybrid electronics prioritize solar and switch to 230 V when irradiation does not cover the operating point (flow rate and TDH), ensuring continuity in transfers, irrigation, and local pressurization. In our catalog, hybridization is implemented with Lorentz PowerPack (PP2000S/PP4000AC/PP600H) on Lorentz PS2 solar pumps and with ZIRI controllers for protection/dual input for their DC series.

Advantages and limitations

  • High availability: operates on solar and maintains service with 230 V single-phase on cloudy days or during peaks.
  • Efficiency: prioritizes photovoltaic to reduce consumption and costs.
  • Electrical simplicity: backup with grid/generator only 230 V single-phase (not three-phase).
  • Limitations: requires correct configuration of switching and DC/AC protections; suction lift is limited (see “Best practices”).

Common applications

  • Transfers between tanks/ponds and filling of cisterns.
  • Irrigation by drip or sprinkler from a tank or surface intake.
  • Local pressurization of auxiliary lines (wash areas, hoses, remote points).

How to choose your hybrid surface pump

  • Operating point: define flow rate (m³/h) and TDH (m). TDH = static head + friction losses (pipes, elbows, valves, and filters). Select by the model’s flow–head curve.
  • Hydraulics: centrifugal (CS-F/CPM/QB/SHF) for medium–high flow rates and low–medium heads; high pressure/BOOST options for greater head with moderate flow.
  • Electronics:
    • Lorentz PS2 + PowerPack (PP2000S/PP4000AC/PP600H): converts PS2 solar units into hybrid systems with 230 V single-phase input.
    • ZIRI hybrid: use of ZIRI controllers to combine DC and 230 V single-phase.
  • AC backup supply: exclusively 230 V single-phase.
  • Suction: minimize suction lift; install a foot valve and strainer. If the intake is deep, consider a hybrid submersible pump.

Indicative specifications

Power supply Priority solar DC + 230 V single-phase AC (backup)
Flow range ~0.3–57 m³/h (depending on CS-F/CPM/QB/SHF/BOOST series)
Total dynamic head ~10–150 m (up to 150 m in high pressure/BOOST)
Control MPPT (solar), DC/AC switching, optional VFD in AC loop if applicable
Protections Dry run (probes/press-control), non-return, DC isolation, DC/AC surge protection
Catalog status Hybrid lines expanding; Lorentz PowerPack and ZIRI controllers available

Best installation practices

  • Place the pump close to and below the water level to facilitate priming; use generous suction piping and avoid elbows.
  • Enable dry run shutdown and install a non-return valve on the discharge.
  • Correctly configure solar/230 V switching and protections (PV isolator, surge protection, circuit breaker/RCBO).
  • Maintenance plan: clean filters, check seals, tighten terminals, and periodically verify insulation.

Comparisons and related accessories

If you do not need backup and prioritize simplicity, see Solar Surface Pumps. For pure AC, consider AC Surface Pumps. For deep water intake, see Hybrid Submersible Pumps. Complete the installation with Accessories (foot valve, filters, Lorentz PowerPack/ZIRI hybrid controllers, DC/AC protections) and consult Spare Parts when you need specific components.
