What is an AGM battery?
An AGM battery is a sealed monoblock accumulator in which the electrolyte is absorbed in fiberglass separators (Absorbed Glass Mat). Being sealed and recombining gases internally, it does not require water replenishment or ventilation as strict as flooded lead-acid batteries. Due to its low maintenance, good current delivery, and resistance to vibrations, it is widely used in off-grid solar installations, caravans, campers, and boats.
Advantages of AGM batteries
- Sealed and maintenance-free: no need to refill electrolyte.
- Safe and clean: minimal gas emission under normal conditions.
- Good current discharge: suitable for equipment starting peaks.
- Low self-discharge: retains charge for long periods.
- Resistant to vibrations and tilting: ideal for mobility and marine use.
Common applications
- Caravans and campers (lighting, refrigerator, pumps, leisure electronics).
- Recreational boating where safety and reliability are prioritized.
- Small homes or cabins with moderate consumption in off-grid self-consumption.
- Backup systems (UPS) and light telecommunications.
AGM vs. other monoblock technologies
- AGM vs Flooded lead-acid: AGM requires no maintenance and is safer; flooded lead-acid is more economical but requires ventilation and inspections.
- AGM vs GEL: AGM delivers better instant current; GEL usually offers better resistance to deep discharges and more cycles in demanding daily use.
Specifications and compatibilities
| Typical voltages | 12V (also 6V in some models) |
| Discharge regime | Good performance in medium discharges; allows peaks |
| Maintenance | Maintenance-free (sealed) |
| Recommended charging | Specific AGM profile in MPPT charge controllers and inverter chargers |
| Environment | Use in ventilated indoor spaces; tolerates vibrations and tilting |
Selection and installation tips
- Size by usable capacity (Ah) and the expected depth of discharge (DoD).
- Adjust voltages/charging curves to the charger's or controller's AGM profile.
- Avoid frequent deep discharges to extend service life.
- For mobility and marine use, prioritize AGM for its robustness against vibrations.
If you are looking for a monoblock battery that is safe, maintenance-free, and robust for mobile or light residential use, AGM batteries offer an excellent balance. If your use will be daily deep cycle and durability is a priority, also consider GEL; if your priority is price, consider flooded lead-acid.
